Honolulu (KHON2) — Construction of a new Hawaii State Hospital patient facility in Kaneohe has been completed.

It boasts state-of-the-art security options designed to accommodate high-risk patients while providing a healing environment.

State-of-the-art facilities are far from the old ones built in the 1950s. With all the bells and whistles, the authorities say there is nothing absolutely certain.

The new psychiatric facility can accommodate up to 144 patients.

The price tag was $ 160.5 million and was incorporated within three years.

The facility boasts everything from multiple safe outdoor areas for patients with spectacular views of the Koolau Mountain Range to comfortable private rooms, gymnasiums and even on-site courtrooms.

The details about security and patient safety are just as impressive. Staff can look down on all patient corridors from a safe place, and cameras are everywhere.

“There are no blind corners here,” said Eddie Mersereau, behavioral health manager at DOH. “We always know where the patient is.”

Also, there is only one way for patients to get in and out.

“This allows us to manage people who come and go much better than ever before,” says Mersereau.

Patient Randall Saito Notorious for escaping from an old facility in November 2017. Saito has been there for over 37 years — acquitted by the madness of Sandra Yamashiro’s murder in 1979. The prosecution said Saito would use a fake ID card to fly to Maui for California.

Saito was arrested a few days later and has been in prison for five years for escape and theft of personal information.

KHON: Can you guarantee that what happened at Saito will never happen again? “

“We can’t guarantee it 100%,” Mersereau said. “But this facility is one of the safest psychiatric facilities in the state and is actually state-of-the-art in terms of national standards. As you can see, there are many controls at the entrance and exit. Yes. I’m 99% sure. I don’t say 100, but I’m 99% sure. “

“After all, this is a hospital, not a prison,” said Senator Jarrett Keokaroll, chair of the Health Commission. “But we need the right facilities needed to make people feel safe and the community feels safe. We can’t guarantee anything, but we have safe, modern and modern facilities. That is really important. “

According to Mersereau, patients will be gradually phased into the facility and should be fully functional sometime in August 2021.
