Charlotte, NC (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) – It was a terrifying situation for a couple taking an early morning walk. Police arrested someone who robbed a man with a gun at McCarpine Creek Park Wednesday morning.

A CMPD official said the suspect was a minor and did not disclose details of the suspect.

For the rest of her life, Maria Lopez will always wonder, why.

“Later, why and why do you wonder why this happened to you?” Maria said.

Maria and her husband, Francisco, were walking on the trail at Makarpine Creek Park, 8700 blocks on Monroe Road, around 6am Wednesday. Maria was slightly ahead of her husband when someone pulled him and put a gun on his head and demanded money.

“I felt it on my back, he put a gun on my head. He asked me for money,” Francisco said. He didn’t have money for him at that time, and told the robber. “He asked me for the key.”

Francisco said he handed the man the key and the robber took off in their car. Police captured the person in charge, but Maria said she was still upset.

“I feel almost like a jelly,” Maria said. “Scared.”

Francisco’s first thoughts were his wife and children when he felt a gun behind his head. The two have been married for 16 years.

“My tears are because I feel God in this situation,” Maria said.

Two of them need to turn somewhere because of those questions they may never be able to answer.

“I get up in the morning and thank God for another day,” Francisco said.

Detective CMPD on Thursday said he had interviewed two boys involved. After the interview, one of the boys was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, north of prison, and charged with armed robbery with dangerous weapons.

The boy also received transportation-related charges such as speeding, no driver’s license, reckless driving, obtaining fictitious license plates, and providing fictitious information to officers.

Detectives are actively considering additional cases to determine possible other involvement. Anyone who has the information will be asked to leave anonymously on Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
