Galveston, Texas (KTRK / CNN)-What many parents were afraid of in this pandemic. Their children were too young for the current COVID-19 vaccine and became infected with the virus.
In Texas, what appears to be COVID-related symptoms killed a young girl. Kali Cook’s mother, Kara Harwood, said Kali died while sleeping at home.
“We are still investigating. The child was attending school in Pre-kindergarten, Galveston County, but the investigation does not seem to be related to being in her school.” Dr. Philip Kaiser of the Galveston County Health Department said.
The Galveston County Health District calls this COVID-related death, but they are still working to identify the official cause of death in Cali. Coroners say Cali tested positive for COVID at the time of her death, but an autopsy would help give more answers.
Karra wanted to make it clear that Kali was healthy and had no existing condition.
Currently, just over 300 Texas children are hospitalized for the virus. Dr. Kaiser encourages parents to carefully monitor their children’s symptoms.
“If your child can be vaccinated and is infected with COVID, or has symptoms that may be COVID, you should be treated immediately. Most children are absolutely fine. In fact, Many children are asymptomatic, but if they have any symptoms, it is advisable to take them to see a doctor, “says Dr. Kaiser.
Cali was a preschooler at KE Little Elementary School in Dickinson ISD. In a letter sent to their parents, they said she was last in school on September 1st and was not informed of COVID exposure or positivity.
