Detroit – Volkswagen Workers at a Tennessee factory have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board asking for a vote to join the United Auto Workers union. Labor union announced on Monday.

The application comes after “the vast majority of Volkswagen workers signed their union cards in just 100 days,” marking a major milestone for the union, the union said. Organize your drives Percentage of non-union auto factories in the United States

The UAW has so far failed to organize foreign automakers in the United States. More recently, Volkswagen and Nissan factories were unable to get the support they needed to unionize. In 2019, VW workers at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant rejected union representation by a vote of 833 to 776.

The Chattanooga plant is Volkswagen's only assembly plant in the U.S. and employs more than 4,000 autoworkers eligible to vote for union representation.

VW confirmed that it had been notified that the UAW had filed a petition with the NLRB requesting an election be held. The company said it respects the democratic process and the right of employees to organize.

“We fully support the NLRB vote and will allow all team members to vote with privacy in this important decision. The election schedule will be determined by the NLRB. We're proud of the working environment we provide, the pay and job security in the region,'' the company said in an emailed statement.

Production workers at the plant will earn between $23.40 and $32.40 an hour, with a four-year growth period to reach the highest wage, the company said.

VW's hourly wage is lower than the UAW negotiated with the Detroit automaker last year. This year's wages range from about $25 to $36 an hour for production workers, including estimated cost of living adjustments (COLA). By the end of the UAW's contract, the maximum wage for production workers is expected to exceed $42 an hour.

Volkswagen is one of them 13 automakers that are not union members The UAW set its sights on the U.S. late last year after winning a record contract with the Detroit automaker.

The movement covers approximately 150,000 auto workers at BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Lucid, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.
