Lagrange, Georgia (CBS46)-A man in Lagrange, Georgia is in desperate need of life-saving medical care after being infected with COVID-19, but there is a lack of equipment that can save him.
Curtis Jones’ wife, India, told CBS46 that she and her husband were paying attention throughout the pandemic. She even said they were vaccinated.
Still, Curtis caught the virus. Now he needs a machine that is hard to come by due to an ongoing pandemic shortage.
“He’s been in Bent for five days now,” India said. “He was 31 years old, healthy, never sick, and Covid pneumonia really devoured his lungs.”
Curtis was hospitalized with Covid-19 nearly two weeks ago. India said her husband does not have organ failure. His blood work looks good. But his lungs are badly damaged.
“This ECMO can definitely be a matter of life and death, as his lungs must have a chance to heal,” she said.
ECMO is a method of oxygenating a patient’s blood outside the body and then pumping it back. The problem is that many machines are not available in Georgia due to the pandemic. Hospitals are also experiencing a shortage of staff, and ICU bed usage is the highest ever.
“We turned our den into a call center and called hundreds of hospitals all over the South,” India said. “The South was really eaten up by Covid.”
Despite the challenges Curtis faces for the virus, India said she still believes in the vaccine.
“Even if you’re vaccinated, you need to be safe and careful. The percentage of CDCs that don’t work perfectly is small, and my husband shows that, so do what the CDC says. “She added. “He is that small percentage.”
India now relies on her faith and hopes her husband will find the life-saving care he needs.
“As we said in the wedding vow, it’s in illness and health, so I’m going to fight for him,” she said.
ECMO is the highest level life support system. Prior to the pandemic, this technique was frequently used by organ transplant candidates.
India is looking for an ECMO facility in Curtis. If you can help, please send an email to email@example.com Or send him a message on Facebook or Twitter: @ZacOnTV.
