Brandon, Florida-A Hillsborough County adjutant was killed on duty after a deliberate clash with a police car on Monday night.
Corporal Brian La Vigne was injured and died at Tampa General Hospital.
He worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for 30 years. He was one shift away from his retirement.
“It hurts and I know the man did it intentionally. It’s daunting, another day he would have ended. He was his life, his wife and his children, He was able to continue his daughter, which was horrifying, “said Linda Unfried, co-founder of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Hillsboro Chapter.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said lawmakers responded to the housing complex twice on Monday.
The sheriff’s office said Travis Garrett had dumped clothes and furniture from his apartment. He was naked and throwing cookies at his neighbor. When a lawmaker came into contact with Garrett, he became combative and hit the officer’s head.
Lawmakers deployed taser guns, but they were not effective. Garrett got into the car and ran away. The sheriff’s office said Garrett intentionally collided with a La Vigne police car.
Linda Unfried is a co-founder of the Hillsborough County Chapter of DUI Eradication Mothers. She said she worked with Cpl. La Vigne of the sheriff’s office.
She first met Cpl. When La Vigne receives an award from MADD.
“He was awarded the Supreme Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for the most drunk driving arrests in 1991, when I met him in 1992 and he received two awards. Was admitted twice in February and June for work with drunk driving criminals and drug criminals, “said Unfried.
The owner of Gracie Fishhawk said La Vigne trained and practiced martial arts at his gym.
“Brian was a phenomenal person. He was kind, affectionate and honest. He was frank and passionate about his family and Jim. As Jim and as a family, against Gracie Fishhawk. I can’t explain in words what he meant and what he did, “said Travis Baumgardner, owner of Gracie Fishhawk.
The suspect faces several crimes, including felony murder, manslaughter from drunk driving, vehicle murder, assault on law enforcement officers, resistance to arrest by violence, felony mischief, and exacerbation of escape. ..
“This was one of the most difficult times we faced as a sheriff’s office, and we lost one of our families to such pointless violence,” said Sheriff Chad Kronister.
“We continue to mourn this loss in both the La Vigne family, the sheriff’s office family, and our community. Our focus is on the justice of Brigadier General La Vigne’s murder and in public service. We continue to focus on celebrating the individuals who have dedicated ourselves. Our dedicated team shares great pain and sorrow, and we continue to work on protection and service. Now is the time for unity. Thank you for your continued support for the sheriff’s office in this community and be humble. “
