More than two years have passed since then All this is ours, The third LP from Kansas City’s punk rock trio, Hipshot Killer, but tomorrow the band will release a new EP. Gun and gas.. It follows in the footsteps of the band’s previous material, advancing with the prosperity of acoustic guitars. Prior to the full release on Friday, July 23, the EP track will be unveiled for the first time. A love song based on last year’s protest, titled “All This Pain”. You can listen to the following songs while reading the interview below. Band guitarist and singer Mike Alexander.
pitch: What was the pandemic like to you?
Mike Alexander: It worked for our benefit as we literally decided to stop playing live a few days before Rona hit. But it was very hard to see everyone else’s tours and shows canceled.
When were these songs written?
Everything was written between June and September last summer. I had some songs before that, but in the summer all the songs came together.
Why did you decide to do an EP in this go-around?
I’ve always wanted to do an EP, but it makes sense because I had three full-length LPs and one LP before that. I also found that when the song started to come together, it needed to be shorter than the LP to keep the story tight. In addition, I only had to write 6 songs instead of the usual 14-17.
Where did the inspiration for the acoustic number “I Don’t Wanna Die” come from?
Last year I participated in protests at Plaza and Midtown for four consecutive days, some of the most horrifying and uplifting ones I was lucky enough to witness.
I think it’s just the stress of living in a pandemic and seeing the cops basically hunting us for a few nights. I snapped at some point. When I got home and wrote the song, I still had tear gas in my eyes. It took 10 minutes to write and 5 minutes to record. You won’t be any longer.
“All This Pain” is like a love song, but it’s also sad. Is it about a particular person or situation?
Ha! As far as I know, there is no love song that is not sad. The protests seemed to be a good background to the story that the two were struggling with each other. is that true? Perhaps, however, the name was changed to protect the guilty.
Do you have any plans for a physical release?
Not for now, but I would like to clarify. If anyone wants to release it in vinyl, please contact me.
