Portland, Oregon (KOIN) — A non-profit organization in Portland helps Latino Americans celebrate culture and tackle a variety of community challenges.

Educate ya Through bilingual health, leadership and education programs, we help address the integration issues facing Latin Americans. These programs include bilingual health educators in Spanish and English to give community health presentations on preventive health and access to medical services.

The organization also has Spanish classes to enhance dialogue between non-Spanish speakers and people of Latin culture.

Rafael Allerano Valera, Executive Secretary of a non-profit organization, said it was important to celebrate the vast culture of Latin America. This is especially true during Hispanic Cultural Heritage Month.

“We celebrate something important,” said Arellano-Barrera. “Because we are in this country and part of this country, it may be the same as celebrating Independence Day, but we want to celebrate our heritage.”

Last Saturday, Edúcate Ya also celebrated its 21st anniversary in the community with a fundraising gala.

Dozens of people bought tickets to attend the event, and it was full of food, quiet auctions and live music.

Ya’s gala fundraising activity included a dance for the participants. Nonprofits have also raised $ 10,000 to continue their community efforts (KOIN).

Fundraising has generated about $ 10,000, according to Arellano-Barrera. The program is free for the community, but he added that Spanish classes cover the costs of maintaining a nonprofit organization.

Arellano-Barrera said he was grateful for the donations from the community, especially during the celebration.
