Omaha, Nebraska (KMTV) — As the need for affordable housing grows in Omaha, a local organization is trying to preserve and change its history.

Built in 1890, the building has been vacant for over a decade along what was once Georgia Street, but Georgia Row Apartments will soon be revived.

InCOMMON Community co-director Christian Gray said: development.

InCOMMON community development is challenging. A degraded skeleton, an old brick wall or even an original staircase is no easy project.

“This is a full and complete rehab, so everything will be replaced except for the exterior finish you see here. All systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical will all be replaced,” Gray said.

But what was worth preserving was the history and beauty of the building.

“What we’re really trying to focus on for this particular building is maintaining the frontage because it has so many features,” Gray said.

This renovation is just one part of a $15 million project to bring more affordable housing to the neighborhood.

“We realized that many of our neighbors were having housing insecurity issues and purchased two apartment complexes, the Georgia Row Apartments here and the Bristol Apartments on Park Avenue,” said Gray.

A total of 75 new affordable units will be rented on Georgia Row for $750-$850 by Fall 2023, accepting Section 8 vouchers.

“Our goal, especially with this project, is to ensure that long-term and low-income residents experience the benefits of a lot of redevelopment going on,” Gray said. .

Georgia Row Apartments has 11 two and three bedroom units.
