Kansas City, Missouri, police say three cops open fire, stalemate continues

Three SWAT officers were shot dead Tuesday night while carrying out a search warrant in their home in Kansas City, Missouri, officials said. That led to a confrontation with the suspected shooter that was going on hours later, according to the sources. CBS affiliate there, KCTV.

Police say the officer’s condition is stable and his injuries are not life-threatening.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says KCTV was called in to investigate the shooting as a third party, but said officers were shot after knocking on the door of the residence and trying to enter.

Police shot back, MHSP said, adding it was not sure if anyone inside had been hit.

According to KCTV, two people at the home were detained and are being questioned.

Negotiators were still trying to get in touch with the person inside, the agency said.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said, “Kansas City was recently reminded of how dangerous police work can be. Tonight, three officers who were injured are fully recovered and all on duty are home. I pray that you will return. Your family will be safe.”

Betsy Webster of Missouri’s CBS Kansas City affiliate KCTV tweeted that her local hospital had “a lot of police officers” and emergency exits were taped up.

She added that the head of the local police union was there and that “as you might expect, the mood is tense.”
