Omaha, Nebraska — This week, drivers heading west on the I-80 at Omaha’s 144th Street exit saw something they wouldn’t see every day.

For about a week and a half, local hairdresser Misty Mans walked in and talked to him, sometimes giving money to a homeless man at the exit. She said he reminded her of her late brother.

“He told me he was down from COVID and couldn’t do the carnival work he’s used to. It was nervous because that was what my brother was doing.”

One day Misty mentioned what she did to make a living. It led to a rare sight at the exit ramp of the interstate highway.

“I told him I would cut my hair to make a living, and he said,” I could use a haircut. So I said, “Okay, when I quit my job I I’ll be back tomorrow. ” “

On Monday, Misty fulfilled her promise, brought her trading tools to the exit ramp, had a haircut on him, and shared a little conversation.

When so many people were still recovering from the pandemic, Misty saw it as an opportunity.

“With our crazy world and COVID now, and everything else … I think we need to be more kind to our world,” she said.

Following the braid of trim and beard, Misty and the man said goodbye in a hug and went on different paths, but before Misty gave him a first aid kit to prevent his hand wounds from becoming infected. It wasn’t.

On my way home, I couldn’t help thinking of my brother and father, who were also travelers.

“My dad died two years ago. When I got home, I thought,” This would have made my dad happy what I did, “and it made me feel good. “I let her do it,” Misty said with the emotions she heard in her voice.

Misty died two years ago from his father, Michael Gilsdorf, at the age of 74 with a cancer of the throat. My brother Mark Brockman died of pancreatic cancer in his 40s six years ago.

People called her dad Mike. It’s the same name as the man she had a haircut.
