Honolulu Police Department Today Recording 911 calls As a result, police officers responded to the robbery at Nuuanu’s house and shot and killed 29-year-old Lindani Mieni on April 14.
This release, two weeks after HPD released a body camera video of the shooting, shows that the unarmed Mieni attacked the officer before being shot dead. His widow and her lawyer, who filed an illegal death proceeding, say police officers will not identify themselves as police until a deadly bullet is fired.
The 911 phone is more than 10 minutes long, and while a woman fighting the language barrier can hear her husband talking to Mieni, she tells Mieni, “Get away, please, get away.” Seems to be talking. I can’t hear their conversation, but I can’t hear any screams or physical conflicts in the recording.
“Hello?” Says the police dispatcher
A woman not identified by police said, “Someone entered my house. He said Lindan (inaudible) in South Africa.”
“Do you know who he is, do you know this guy,” the coordinator asks.
“I don’t know him. He’s at home,” she replies. “I don’t know if he knows the owner, but he just comes in and says weird (inaudible).”
Women’s voices become more and more tense and afraid. She tells the dispatcher that Mieni is wandering around the house in a black T-shirt and jeans.
When asked if Mieni was armed or yelling at the woman and her husband, she answered “no.”
“I don’t know why he … tried to go out. I don’t know.”
Approximately five minutes after the call, a police officer arrives at the scene and the woman goes out and warns the police officer of Myeni’s location.
“It’s him in the dark,” she exclaims. “It’s him. It’s him. It’s him.”
Police officers can hear him ordering Mieni to the ground before the quarrel begins.
“The policeman shot him,” the woman shouted. “He is attacking a policeman.”
“Oh my god,” says the coordinator. “I just heard the shot fired.”
Mieni died of multiple gunshot wounds. Three police officers were seriously injured and only one returned to work since the incident.
