The city announced this afternoon that Honolulu Zoo’s only male lion, Ekundu, died of a coronavirus on Monday.

13-year-old Ekundu came to Honolulu in 2010. He and Moxy, a 12-year-old lioness, showed signs of an upper respiratory tract infection, including a cough, on October 4.

Samples were collected and sent to mainland laboratories, both of which were found to be COVID-19 positive.

Ekundu, who had been treated for epilepsy for more than five years, became ill and stopped eating.

He seemed to improve, but died before the test results were available.

Zoo veterinarian Jill Yoshised said: The tragic loss of life of these species. “

The zoo says it doesn’t know the source of the virus. Zoo staff caring for big cats were vaccinated and adhered to the city’s employee vaccination policy. All COVID-19 were negative.

“Zoo staff continue to practice strict biohazard protocols to prevent the spread of the virus to other animal areas,” the city said in today’s news release.
