Hookstown Fire Department Desperate For Volunteers Amid Increase In Call Volume – CBS Pittsburgh – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Hookstown, PA (KDKA) — I’ve tried everything from public relations to radio advertising, but the local volunteer fire department still can’t find a volunteer.

And now the department is barely moving forward.

“I’m worried that I or someone I know may have an emergency and no one will come,” said Doug Waxler, chief of the Fuchstown Fire Department.

His department covers three municipalities and provides mutual aid to a fourth municipality. According to Waxler, this year there was a 14% increase in call volume and more traffic through the area.

The number of volunteers for emergency medical services has also declined significantly.

“We will address life-threatening issues until the ambulance arrives. In EMS situations, we cannot answer about half of the calls,” the chief told KDKA.

But when the department responded, Waxler said, “So far this year, on average, it’s about 33 minutes.”

Ideally, Waxler wanted someone to respond within 8 to 10 minutes. This decline has been around for decades and is occurring nationwide, throughout states and counties.

Brian Hanne, secretary of the Beaver County Firefighters Association, told KDKA that it was partly due to the cancellation of the firefighting training class during the pandemic and is provided free of charge by the association.

“The work that took six months to complete has been postponed all year round,” says Hanne.

Hookstown is still down, so we haven’t missed a fire. However, as staffing is becoming more important, managers are afraid that the department will do so in the future.
