KOIN, Oregon — To prevent the onslaught of winter peasant evictions, Oregon Governor Kate Brown calls for a special session within two weeks.

Brown will convene the Oregon Legislature on December 13th for a special session. Announced by her office in a press release on Tuesday, Brown wants to work on eviction protection for lessor peasants.

According to the press release, most of the state’s federal funding for rental assistance will be spent by this Wednesday. She continues to work with the US Treasury and the White House to secure additional funding, but Brown says, “We need a state solution to address the urgent and urgent needs of Oregon renters.” It states.

“When we enter the coldest months, it is imperative to take action to prevent additional Oregon families from being kicked out when rental assistance is in progress,” Brown said. “I have spoken directly with Oregon renters over the past few weeks about the pain and difficulties facing families due to the financial impact of the pandemic. Approving additional state funding for rental assistance, Legislative action needs to be taken immediately to extend the eviction protection of Oregon citizens who have applied for assistance. “

Brown is also urging lawmakers to begin laying the groundwork for a more community-led peasant eviction service after the federal pandemic emergency program is over.

According to the governor’s office, Brown spoke with legislative leaders, stakeholders, landlords’ associations, and home advocates. After having those conversations, Brown is now proposing a framework to prevent evictions.

The framework contains four important points:

  • Extend eviction safe harbor protection for each individual who applies for rental assistance.
  • Make sure that the landlord pays the full amount of the rent you are renting.
  • We will provide up to $ 90 million in additional rental assistance to ensure access for low-income tenants during the winter months.
  • We will provide $ 100 million in the transition from large-scale pandemic-related emergency rental assistance to long-term eviction prevention services provided locally.

The announcement comes after thousands of households in Oregon are waiting for the state to get rental assistance, and some groups have called for a special session to expand eviction protection for peasants.

NS Oregon Low Center He told KOIN 6 News that he was still in contact with his family who were anxious for help and that he was out of time as he was waiting for his rental assistance application to be approved.

According to the latest figures, more than 11,000 households in Oregon were outside the safe harbor windows for 60 and 90 days and could not be evacuated if they asked the landlord for help. ..

As a result, the Oregon State Law Center said that the number of evictions for peasants has increased six-fold since July.

Eviction will be the main focus of this upcoming special session, but legislators will also have the opportunity to address other pressing issues.
