Holly County, South Carolina (WBTW) — Holly County Fire Rescue has just hired dozens of new hires and is looking to hire more to keep up with growth.
Horry County FireRescue spokesman Tony Casey said that all stations are getting more calls and need more people. So far, HCFR has more than 67,000 calls, according to Casey, which is a record 63,000 or more calls in 2020.
“It’s a busy organization,” Casey said. “Many people entering this career are looking for it, and we have it for them. There are parts of the county that are always on the phone.”
Areas such as Einer and Carolina Forest are growing and staffing where they are needed, according to Casey. He said the SAFER grant could hire more people. This grant fully covers the payment of the new fire class for 3 years.
“It’s always a plan to grow with the county, and the county council and management staff were really happy to allow us to grow with the county,” Casey said.
According to Casey, the crew is also preparing for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is historically the day to respond to more building fire calls.
“These heating elements, whether in the oven or on the grill, always need attention,” he said.
