Conway, South Carolina (WBTW) — Horry County Schools (HCS) has established a process to fill the school board vacancy left by former Vice-Chair John Poston. The person who died in COVID-19 last month.

Poston represents District 8 and will be seated on the school board until November 2022. The seats are then elected to select those who will serve the last two years of Poston’s term.

District 8 includes part of the Conway area near Forest Brook and Coastal Carolina University. Anyone applying for a job must live in District 8.

At a board meeting on Monday night, HCS announced that it would officially begin advertising vacancies on Thursday. The deadline for submission is March 18, and board members will receive information about the applicant the next day.

The board is then expected to select finalists for that position at its regular scheduled March 22 meeting. HCS is also expected to hold a specially called board meeting on April 12 to interview finalists before appointing a successor. After that, a new director will be appointed at the regular meeting on April 19.

State law requires the school board to fill vacant seats within 90 days. In other words, you need to fill the vacant seats by April 30th.
