Members of the Writers Guild of America dropped their pencils and headed for the picket line a week ago, but their strike has already taken a toll on Hollywood productions.

More than 11,000 film and TV writers are going on strike for the first time since 2008, claiming their pay doesn’t match the revenue generated in the streaming age. Alongside the weekly comedy staple “Saturday Night Live,” the daily late-night show went dark.

Since then, several notable movies and shows have canceled or ended production early. Netflix “Stranger Things” disney And Marvel’s “Blade” Apple TV+ “Destruction” and Paramount’s “evil.”

Beyond potential production delays and release delays for these titles, industry experts fear that the pause in work could result in greater financial losses than previous writers’ strikes. I’m here.

Writers who were picketing 15 years ago went on strike for 100 days, costing the industry an estimated $2 billion, according to Milken Institute data. Ancillary businesses involved in film and television production, such as hotels, restaurants and construction companies, also had a significant economic impact.

This is the first strike of its kind in the streaming era, hitting many companies across three different facets of the media business: theater, linear TV and streaming.

The WGA is seeking higher compensation and residuals, especially when it comes to streaming shows, and is also seeking new rules requiring studios to place a certain number of writers on TV shows for a certain period of time. It also seeks compensation throughout the pre-production, production, and post-production processes.Nowadays, writers are often expected to provide corrections or create new material without receiving compensation.

Some productions with finished scripts like Amazon’s ‘The Rings of Power’ has decided to continue filming without a writer or showrunner on set. Others have chosen to postpone production.

On Monday, Apple’s drama series Severance suspended production for its second season after members of the International Alliance of Theater Employees (IATSE) and teamsters refused to cross the WGA picket line at New York’s York Studios. .

This is the second Apple TV+ series to shut down due to a strike, after Maya Rudolph’s series “Booty” paused filming in Los Angeles last week.

Over the weekend, “Stranger Things” creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer announced that production on the show’s fifth and final season had been delayed due to labor unrest.

“The writing doesn’t stop when the shooting starts,” they tweeted. “We are excited to start production with an amazing cast and crew, but that is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal can be struck soon and we can all get back to work.”

Paramount’s ‘evil’ is set to return to filming in season 4 sooner than expected, partly due to disruptions by WGA member Pique and partly because one of the cast members is on hiatus due to family issues. It’s done. The season was scheduled to have 10 episodes, but it’s unclear if the early termination of production will affect those plans.

warner bros discoveries Streaming shows “Hacks,” Showtime’s “Billions,” and Starz’s “The Venery of Samantha Bird” have all gone out of production.

On the theater front, Marvel has halted production on the vampire thriller Blade. The film was set to begin shooting next month in Atlanta, Georgia. His Nic Pizzolatto, creator of “True Detective,” was recently tapped to work on the script, but it didn’t finish, and he plans to resume production once the strike is over.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers declined to comment beyond a statement released last week when asked to comment on the cancellation.

Ripple effect

The strike is already having ripple effects across the industry as stars and talent stand in solidarity with writers.

Drew Barrymore has stepped down from his role as host of the MTV Movie Awards in support of the WGA. Several presenters, including Jamie Lee Curtis, also indicated they would not be attending the ceremony.

Viewers at home may not immediately notice the impact of the strike, as episodes of popular shows continue to roll out. However, future seasons may experience significant delays or reduced episode counts.

The writers of ABC’s Abbott Elementary were scheduled to meet on May 2 to begin work on Season 3 of the hit comedy show. But that room is closed due to a strike.

Similarly, Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” screenwriters’ room only met for one day to work on Season 3 before going on strike. At Warner Bros. Discovery, the “Game of Thrones” prequel “Knights of the Seven Kingdoms: Hedge Knight” also closed its writers’ rooms during the strike.

Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ has been put on hiatus due to a labor dispute, six weeks after writing its eighth and final season. The streamer’s hit “Cobra Kai” also had its writer’s room closed for Season 6.

The longer the strike lasts, the more productions are expected to be affected.

TD Cowen analyst Doug Kreutz said in a research note released on Friday that “the strike could certainly be prolonged.” Prolongation, he defined, as 3 months or more.

“Obviously, a much longer strike could impact the amount of new programming available on streaming services and linear networks, ultimately encouraging both SVOD churn and linear cord cuts. ‘ he said.
