Juneau, Alaska-The search for a woman from Houston was interrupted in the Alaska waters four days after she left the cruise ship, officials said.
According to USCoast Guard, 40-year-old Selena Pau Pres fell from Celebrity Solstice on Tuesday on the Lynn Canal, about 20 miles northwest of Juneau.
“It’s from the bottom of my heart that I make the decision to suspend the search, despite my best efforts to find an individual,” said Coast Guard Lieutenant Trevor Rayman, a mission officer at Sector Juneau Command. Said. “The decision to suspend active searches is based on many factors, including weather, sea conditions, water temperature, and other variables.”
The captain told authorities that the ship had fallen overboard around 3 am on Tuesday because it was near Eldred Rock.
The crew covered 68 square nautical miles and stopped efforts after more than nine hours of searching, officials said.
The Alaska Investigation Bureau of the Alaska State Police is conducting death investigations related to the incident.
According to the Associated Press, the temperature in Juneau was 51 degrees Celsius on Tuesday afternoon, and the National Weather Service said the water temperature was 41 degrees Celsius.
KHOU is seeking comment from Celebrity Cruises, the operator of the ship.
The area where the press fell is known as the Inside Passage. This is a historic north-south route for cruise ships and Alaska ferries through the waters of southeastern Alaska and British Columbia.
