How to Disable Meta AI Comment Summaries, Enabled by Default in Your Settings
Users across Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have increasingly sought ways to disable specific features since the company introduced its AI integration in April.
Communities on platforms like Reddit have become hubs for sharing tips on muting functions such as Meta AI search and chat. However, it’s currently not possible to entirely deactivate Meta AI altogether.
Despite the absence of a universal switch-off option, users can still manage some intrusive components, including those activated by default without their awareness.
One notable default feature is “comment summaries,” which automatically generates AI-generated summaries of comment sections on posts. These summaries aim to condense commenters’ sentiments and opinions on the post into brief blurbs.
Facebook’s Help Center notes that this feature is applied to “some Page posts with a large number of comments.” However, its default activation has sparked privacy concerns among users cautious about their online interactions being processed by Meta AI for learning and generation purposes.
Interested in opting out of Meta AI comment summaries? Here’s a quick guide to do so:
How to Disable Meta AI Comment Summaries on Facebook
- Open Facebook and locate the “Account” section, typically represented by a circle icon in the upper right corner with your profile picture. Click on the circle to reveal a dropdown menu.
- From the dropdown menu, choose “Settings & privacy.”
- Select “Settings” from the subsequent menu.
- In the left sidebar under “Settings & Privacy,” scroll down to find “Audience & visibility.”
- Under “Audience & visibility,” click on the “Posts” tab.
- Look for the setting titled “Show comment summaries on posts.” By default, this setting is toggled to “on.” Click on the button to switch it off.
Following these steps allows users to disable Meta AI comment summaries, offering greater control over their privacy and interaction settings on Facebook.
