The first sentence of Scott Peck’s book, Road with few trips, Is “life is difficult”. Then he continues that if you accept this, you will be okay. There are many adversities in life and none of us are exempt. That is why we need to focus on the good things in life to move forward.
Here are four ways you can focus on the good things in life, especially during difficult times.
1. “The tough times will not last, but the tough people will.”
“The tough times never last, but the tough people do.”
The above quote is the outstanding title of Dr. Robert Schuller. Book.. The title tells you everything you need to know about a book.
We have experienced a tough 2020, but 2021 could be just as tough. We hope that vaccines and proper protocols will survive these difficult times. Americans in the 20th century suffered from two world wars and the catastrophic Great Depression. To survive these times, they had to be tough — and they were. Now it’s our turn to show our toughness.
There are three possible examples of people showing toughness in recent years.
Initially associated with the Catholic Church and a terrible childhood scandal. I think it was the worst time in church history. What happened to the children was not conscientious. Another aspect of the problem was the falsely accused priest. Two people in the Chicago area knew they were innocent and showed their toughness in different ways.
The first person overcame it in prayer — especially for his whistleblower. Prayer is a great way to overcome difficult times. The second was able to maintain his optimism. He said he kept repeating sentences from John and Bobby Kennedy’s mother, Rose: “Birds always sing after a storm.”
Both men were exonerated after the most difficult and humiliating time. Their whistleblowers eventually admitted that they lied.
Another way to get past the times is to bring in the best people. Winston Churchill told the British people, “Never give in!” During the worst bombing of London in World War II. The British did just that.
Another way to get past the times is determination and work. When I was working there, we were trying to build a gymnasium at Providence High School. We have drafted a treatise that provides a rationale for why we need a gym and presented it to those who have the means in our community.
The vote was 16-0 and we shouldn’t have tried to build in such a difficult economic situation. Providence has a gym today because of work ethic and the determination of a man, his father (then bishop) Roger Kaffer.
Finally, the team experiences difficult times in athletics. It started from 3-6 in one season. I decided to go back to the basics. Having returned to Fundamentals, I finished 9-2 and entered the conference championship. All organizations can return to their core values during difficult times.
Prayer, optimism, doing our best, determination, work, and our core values can help us survive difficult times.
2. Think carefully
“Think carefully” is an Irish maxim that encourages people to remain positive. With our thinking, we can overcome difficult times and find good things.
Dale Carnegie writes: “You are happy not what you have, who you are, where you are, what you are doing. That is what you think.”
Enjoyed a basketball coach with an interesting idea. He asked the referee if he could give a technical foul to what he was thinking. Of course, ref said it wasn’t. The coach then replied, “I think you stink!”
Willie Nelson emphasized attention in one of his many songs Negative thinking.. In other words, he refrained from saying, “When it’s bad, it’s as heavy as lead in your heart, so think about the good.”
Students at St. Francis College went to Bolivia every year to help people build and repair their homes. When I asked what I learned from traveling, I couldn’t believe the poverty that people live in, and I couldn’t believe the positive attitude that people live in. Their kindness, humor, and compassion were incredible. For some reason, they consistently had good ideas, despite the difficult situation.
Mother Teresa thoughtfully summarized it when she wrote: Let’s not let anyone come to you without leaving happiness. ”
When you overcome the hardships and decide to “keep good ideas,” you can focus on the good things in life.
3. Be in the moment
We focus on good things when we are happy. Roy T. Bennett writes, “If you want to be happy, focus on living completely in the present, not living in the past and worrying about the future.”
Two emotions that can rob us of happiness are guilt and worry. Jeffrey Nevid called them “useless emotions.”
Guilt refers to the past. We can choose to feel guilty about what we have done in the past. It’s our privilege, but the bottom line is that we can’t change it. it’s over! But what we can do is learn from it and move on. Learning from it is an easy part. Going forward, the reality is certainly only the difficult part.
Mark Twain had great insight into his concerns about being a guilty partner. When he wrote, “I experienced some terrible things in my life, some of which happened.”
Too often, we worry that it will never happen. If guilt and worry are tied to our past and future and they are “useless emotions,” the only option is to live in the present.
For the first 25 years after teaching basketball at St. Francis College, there was no bus to go to the road game. Our coach drove a van. There were 21 NAIA teams in Illinois, and only 6 teams played off. We finally had the chance to be one of the six, but we had to win another match. The teams we played were about 5 hours apart. I went down 12 in 4 minutes to join the game. With 2 seconds left, we gathered to make two free throws and gained 1 point.
They inbound the ball into a free throw line about 79 feet away from the basket. Their player threw a “Hale Merry” ball into the basket. It went in quickly and knocked us out of the playoffs! I had the option of staying in that incredible ending and living in the past or in the present and safely returning the player to campus! Fortunately, we went home.
We can focus on good by making ourselves happy. Many have confirmed that we can make ourselves happy.
Aristoteles kept it simple, “happiness depends on ourselves.”
The Dalai Lama writes: “Happiness is not prefabricated. It comes from your own actions.”
Actress Audrey Hepburn had the insight that “the most important thing is to enjoy your life, to be happy, that’s what matters.”
Mahatma Gandhi saw it this way. “Happiness is when what you think, say, and do is in harmony.”
When we enter a state of happiness Stay in the present At the moment we can focus on the good things in life.
4. Help others
“The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer up someone else,” writes Mark Twain.
Former high school classmate Pat Warren was constantly rooting for our friends when they were experiencing difficult times. I heard that person was suffering and told myself that I had to meet him. Inevitably, Pat was already there by the time I finally met him. He has always focused on the good things he can do for others, especially during difficult times.
Former Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon told players, “Make sure the pressure doesn’t go beyond joy.” I saw one of his players carry out the joy.
One of my grandchildren was in a Little League game north of Chicago. He was playing on one field and had another game on an adjacent field. Looking at the other fields, the game was stopped and all players and fans surrounded someone.
Ben Zobrist lived near the park where the children were playing. He was the most valuable player in the World Series last year. So there was a lot of pressure on him to do a good performance next year, but he made sure that the pressure didn’t exceed his joy.
That day, the Cubs played a match. He lived near their home park, Wrigley Field, so he often wore uniforms and biked to play games. But before riding his game that day, he rode in the park we were in.
Athletes and adults were excited to see the 2016 World Series MVP and meet. He stayed in the park until he signed all the signs of everyone in both fields! It was a random act of kindness as he gave the children great joy. He focused on good, despite the pressure he was facing in the game.

Martin Luther King writes, “Somewhere along the way, we have to learn that there is nothing more than doing something for others.”
Charles Dickens talked about two types of people who can help. “There were two types of charity. One was the one who did little and made a big fuss. The other did a lot and didn’t make a fuss at all.”
Finally, Jim Rohn writes about the relationship between giving and receiving: “Only by giving, you can receive more than you already have.”
By helping others, especially during difficult times, you can focus on the good things in life.
We can focus on the good things of life in difficult times in four ways:
- By being tough and not afraid of tough times
- Think carefully
- By staying at that moment
- By being there for others
Difficult times are inevitable, but they inevitably end. The important thing is to focus on the good, and you will eventually get there.
