Greenville, South Carolina (WSPA) – On Thursday, millions of Americans gather around the table to share their meals with their loved ones.
As part of the “Ask the Expert” series BonSecours St. Francis, 7NEWS talked with a registered dietitian on how to choose healthier foods throughout this Thanksgiving and holiday season.
For many, Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without spreads such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, macaroni and cheese, and casserole. Don’t forget the pie.
Natalie Harris, a registered dietitian, said that you can start with exchanging some ingredients and make healthy adjustments without breaking tradition.

If you have one or two casseroles in your menu, consider this simple change.
“Use low-sodium soup instead of creamy soup, which can help reduce your sodium content, your fat, and your calories,” Harris said.
If macaroni and cheese is your favorite good news, it’s not off limits. However, Harris recommends preparing this way. “We’re switching to whole grains, so we’ll sneak in as much whole grain as we can. If you’re doing macaroni and cheese, you might choose whole grain noodles,” says Harris.
Everyone knows that turkey is the main event, Harris said it’s a great, lean protein full of vitamins and minerals.
There is not much nutritional difference between the two, whether light or dark.
“So it really depends on your taste. From a white meat point of view, it’s a bit low in calories, but when you look at the size of the potion, it doesn’t make a big difference,” says Harris.
However, fried foods such as dropping turkey into fried foods are delicious but should be avoided.
“I want to enjoy more baking, grilling and roasting,” Harris said.
Harris said he might want to stop for a day to prepare for a feast, but it’s not a good idea to skip a meal even on Thanksgiving.
“Once you’re on Thanksgiving Day knowing that you eat three meals a day, you don’t have to pack all the calories in one meal. It can help you prevent overeating. “I will.” Harris said.
