Talk about bad timing: Many companies are now telling their employees to return to the office.
At the same time, there is growing concern about the COVID-19 delta variant.
Consumer reporter John Matarese shows what you can do if you want to stay at home for at least a few days a week, so you don’t waste money.
Returning to the office this summer is a big move, but some people aren’t ready.
So I talked to an expert about how to talk to my boss about maintaining a flex schedule.
Beth Schirmer has a schedule that most office workers dream of.
“I’m lucky to have that flexibility,” she said.
The law firm and mom’s chief officer are in the office a couple of days a week and at home the rest of the day.
“I’m glad to know that HVAC people don’t have to be at home or at home,” she said.
Urban planner Seanston Brown says he can’t understand working in the office five days a week anymore.
“I think this new technology makes it easier than we thought it would be,” Brown said.
But many of us are not so lucky.
The office door opens, the face mask comes off, and my boss wants me to come back to the office next week.
But what if you’re not ready to return full-time?
Back in the office, some people are just not ready for it.
Employment lawyer Kelly Myers says that if you need a flex schedule, you don’t just ask.
Instead, she says she emails her boss a specific reason for staying at home and explains the benefits of the company.
“Come to your employer with business justification for why working from home is good for your company and for you,” Myers said. “Make it advantageous to each other.”
Next, I’ll explain why you’re more productive at home.
“Give an example of how productivity was achieved or exceeded at home,” she said.
Plan your face-to-face time.
“Give me an example of how to approach a meeting with people in the office right now,” she said.
Schirmer’s company is fine with her flex schedule.
But you may not, and you may find yourself missing too much.
“The biggest disadvantage is that you can’t see it in your head,” Myers said.
She says that if everyone else is in the office full-time, they will be handed over for promotion or, worse, risk.
So maybe just request a day at home and don’t waste your money.
