Austin (KXAN) – On Sunday, May 15th, the Earth will cast a shadow on the Moon. Depending on the weather, you can see the total lunar eclipse.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse is when the earth comes between the sun and the moon. This means that all the rays of the sun are blocked by the earth and the shadows of the earth darken the moon.
A total lunar eclipse means that the entire moon is thrown into the dark.
However, the moon is not completely invisible. While the Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light, the red light passes through the Earth’s atmosphere and refracts toward the moon, causing a reddish glow. The more clouds and dust in the Earth’s atmosphere, the redder the moon.
When can i see it?
according to NASAThe Moon begins to enter the partial shadow of the Earth shortly after 9:30 pm EST on Sunday night. You can see the moon darken slightly around 10:28 pm. The complete shadow of the earth will cover the moon after an hour.
The solar eclipse peaks at 12:11 am on Monday. According to NASA, the Moon will begin to leave the shadow of the Earth at 12:54 am and will fully appear at 1:55 am.
You can observe the lunar eclipse without a protective device. Binoculars and even telescopes look much better.
What if I miss it?
The next total lunar eclipse visible from the United States will occur on November 8, 2022, later this year.
The May 15th solar eclipse is the second time this year, but it is the first to be seen from the United States. A partial solar eclipse has already occurred on April 30th. Another solar eclipse occurs on October 25th, but is not visible in the United States.
