Titusville, Florida — NASA plans to launch a new asteroid exploration spacecraft, Lucy, into space on Saturday morning.
After the launch, Lucy begins her path to becoming the first spacecraft to visit Jupiter’s Trojan asteroid.
Lucy is set to explore a record number of asteroids flying by one and seven Trojan asteroids on the main belt of the solar system during a major mission of 12 years.
Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids are made up of raw materials left over from the formation of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. NASA.. As Jupiter orbits the Sun, they share an orbit with Jupiter.
In total, NASA says the spacecraft built by Lockheed Martin Space will travel nearly 4 billion miles, creating a huge 3.5 loop around the Sun.
The path returns to Earth three times for gravity assist. This says NASA will be the first spacecraft to return from the outer solar system to near our planet.
Lucy will launch the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V401 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station complex in Florida by 5:34 am on Saturday, October 16th.
