Hub City Press has announced the publication of Ashleigh Bell Pedersen’s debut novel. Crocodile bride.
Set in the swampy Louisiana in the summer of 1982 Crocodile bride Eleven-year-old Sunshine Interner and her troubled father Billy follow the family’s past secrets swirling around the yellow house in the small town of Fingertips.
The novel will be published in the Cold Mountain Fund series in the spring of 2022 in collaboration with Charles Frazier.
In the hot June summer mood, grab worms, and dark storms of Louisiana, 11-year-old Sunshine Interner discovers a chest stone and learns the dangers of a coming-of-age ceremony on a yellow home. As summer approaches, Billy’s sister, Sunshine’s aunt Lou, begins to doubt and understand the secrets hidden in the house at the end of the red dirt track on Only Road (population: 62) at her fingertips. This uneasy present that has to confront her own past. Ashley Bell Pedersen’s fiction is featured in New stories from the South, Kenion reviews, Iowa reviews, design observers, silent history, strange objects, And the Library Simplified app of the New York Public Library. Her story “Smalland Heavy World” is a finalist for both the Best American Short Story and the Pushcart Awards, and her story “Crocodile” won the Masters Review 2020 Flash Fiction Contest. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Pittsburgh and has won the Education Fellowship and Turow-Kinder Award. She currently lives in Austin, Texas, where she writes, plays, acts in movies, and teaches dog Arnie the proper lacing etiquette.
