“We planned this last year, but we’re excited today because COVID knocked us out,” said Katie Godwin. “It’s really going to happen, and we’ve registered over 200 runners.”
Godwin founded the Faratner Foundation in honor of his daughter. She said the proceeds from the race would be used to help the Foundation with its goal of protecting and serving children who were victims of sexual abuse and assault.
“Fara was a child crime investigator, so she was passionate about hurting her children,” Godwin said. “If this happens to you, I just want to let the kids know that it’s not your fault.”
She estimated that 5K raised about $ 10,000.
“There is so much love and support from the whole community,” Godwin said. “I had several virtual runners everywhere from Raleigh, Florida.”
She said her work with the Foundation was part of keeping her daughter’s legacy alive.
“It feels great,” Godwin said. “All my board members are pretty new in this regard. I’m new, so we’re learning as we go. I don’t want to be my own foundation. I want to be a community foundation.”
