Pittsburgh (KDKA) —Federal prosecutors have charged Hassey Copper for illegally contaminating the Ohio River.
The Rietzdale Copper Company has been charged with a felony under the Clean Water Act.
US federal prosecutor Scott Brady said Hassey Copper tried to dump oil, copper and other pollutants into the river and hide it in false reports.
The prosecution says it happened over five years.
“Protecting the precious natural resources of western Pennsylvania is a significant responsibility and a priority for this office,” Brady, a US attorney, said in a statement. “It is an unacceptable crime to contaminate and lie about waterways in western Pennsylvania, as this criminal information filing reveals. If you contaminate and try to hide it, you Will be investigated and prosecuted.
