Pitkin County, Colorado – According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, highway 82 is closed in both directions on the Independence Pass due to high-altitude winter weather.
The sheriff’s office said there was no scheduled time to reopen the highway.
The National Meteorological Service has issued winter storm warnings to the valleys of Mt. West Elk and Mt. Sawatch, Mt. Mesa and Gore on the ground and chest wall, and Mt. Elk / Mt. Chuozan until midnight.
According to NWS officials, the snow is expected to exceed 9,000 feet, with a total snowfall of 4-8 inches, allowing more snow locally. In some areas, strong winds of 40 mph can occur.
