French startup Hyperline wants to build the next generation Chargebee. Over the past two years, the startup has created a new billing platform that can be used for recurring subscriptions, one-off purchases, usage-based billing and more. Hyperline raised an initial €4 million funding round from Index Ventures in 2023 ($4.1 million at current exchange rates). And Index Ventures doubled down on this investment as it invested another $10 million in the startup. While billing seems like an immediate problem, it becomes a tedious problem once you start scaling. “With billing, what wastes time, it’s really a daily operation. Every day, if you have more than 200 or 300 customers, someone has to check that everything is correct,” founder and CEO Lucas Bédout told TechCrunch. Sometimes, the price isn’t right. Other times, you forget to add some items to the invoice or the client asks for a partial refund. And, of course, automatic payments fail quite regularly for one reason or another. “In the beginning, we said to ourselves, we will look at the current tools like Chargebee, and we will be better than them. In addition, it is 20% better, but everything has changed so now it is just different. Now, people are looking for automation, they are not want to process invoices manually, send reminders, etc. Bédout said. In addition to subscription management, the client can quickly set a specific price or add some components based on what they use. Hyperline too handle the invoice directly. And when it’s time to pay, Hyperline doesn’t process the payment directly but takes care of that part for you. We position ourselves as an orchestra. The customer does not directly use the payment processor, “says Bédout. Instead of juggling between different tabs to interact with Stripe, GoCardless, Airwallex or other payment processors, Hyperline acts as an interface to interact with these payment providers. It facilitates the use of various payment providers depending on the country or payment method. Customers usually connect Hyperline to CRM. They also connect the platform with accounting software to process invoices and reconciliations payments. But Hyperline also offers an API, which can be very useful for synchronizing events based on usage. Currently there are 14 people working at Hyperline, but the company expects to grow to 25 employees in the future. Clients include Lokki, Malou , ScorePlay, Gladia and Formance. “The majority of customers now generate between €3 and €10 million in revenue,” said Bédout. But Hyperline has thought of working with large companies that handle large amounts of invoices. That requires working with an integration company. And something Hyperline has tested.
