Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) — After being diagnosed with COVID-19, colleagues and family are gathering around the nurse in charge fighting for his life.

Gary Woodward is the ICU team leader at Ascension Saint Thomas West Hospital. According to his wife, he has been teaching nurses for many years. “For the last 25 years, Gary has definitely been where he needed it,” said Jack Woodward.

Now that remains true, as those same people are fighting to save his life. “Currently, he is still on critical care and is on ventilator,” Woodward said.

Jack said Gary had no existing health. Being the first overnight patient, the family is shocked that he has complications from COVID-19. “We know he will wake up. We feel it in the Lord,” Woodward said.

Gary has been exposed to so much life that his team took some time to pray for his recovery. “I can’t express it in words, I can’t really express it, the power of God is so overwhelming,” Woodward said.

Gary and Jack met when they were 13 and 14. November 22nd We are celebrating the 45th anniversary of our marriage. “I was standing on the altar, and I was committed to illness and health, and I support it today,” Woodward said.

She renewed their vows this weekend and decided to wear an old wedding dress. “This was my way to show him that I was standing on the altar. He will come home.”

Jack said her family was sticking to their faith to survive this time and they were seeking prayer. “That’s why we remain strong,” Woodward said.

Jack also works in the Kentucky healthcare industry. Fortunately, she tested negative and never got sick.
