I wanted to give my daughter a brother. I got Covid instead.

A close friend was supposed to start in vitro fertilization injections at the same time, but she decided to postpone it at the last minute because of the high number of cases of Covid in our area. By that time, we were driven by the pursuit of pregnancy and were surprised to hear her.

There is no reliable way to know if you were exposed to the virus someday during this last fertility treatment. The Surgical Center is located on a large medical campus hosting a Covid-19 test drive-through in our parked garage. I also wore a mask and waited for nearly an hour outside a building that I thought was safer than the fertility clinic’s waiting room, but in reality I was near many sick people waiting to get home. ..

Also, I had to remove the mask just before the actual egg collection because I was under anesthesia and the doctor needed quick access to my mouth in case I needed a respiratory tract.

Five days after egg collection, it was found to be Covid positive. I immediately called the clinic to warn. The fertility doctor told me a few days later that none of her staff got sick. Also, none of the eggs they collected from me were growing properly. There were no embryos to use.

Of course, as anyone who has had fertility treatment knows, all the dangers and risks we take will be “worth it” if it works. It didn’t work, so I was defeated and felt stupid.

In short, we wanted to give Goldie a brother, which may have threatened her mother’s life. This idea bothers me and I never know exactly how the virus invaded our home, but I’ll be with me forever.

A nanny who also experienced Covid’s symptoms and tested positive three days ago should have been able to pick it up in the supermarket. We could have got it from her or while walking around the neighborhood or playing in the park. But as the pandemic rages, the act of choosing to engage in fertility treatment over and over again fills me with suspicion and regret.
