El Paso, Texas (Border report) – El Paso’s facilities, privately contracted by the US Immigration and Customs Department, have the second highest number of COVID-19-positive detained immigrants in the country.
At the Endeavors facility, which ICE lists as the Best Western Hotel in eastern El Paso, 42 confirmed cases were quarantined or monitored on Tuesday. This is second only to 66 House of Peace contracted facilities in Pearsall, Texas. ICE web page.. The facility is also operated by Endeavors.
By comparison, the El Paso Service Processing Center had only 18 cases, and the Torrance County Detention Center in Estancia, New Mexico had only 8 cases. Like Best Western Endeavors, these facilities are also located in the El Paso sector.
In March, ICE signed a short-term contract with Endeavors to provide temporary shelter and processing services to families undergoing immigration procedures from the United States. The $ 86.9 million contract was for 1,239 family beds and services. Services include a health assessment of each family and a COVID-19 test.
The Border Report contacted ICE’s El Paso office on Tuesday to explain the number of cases on the previous Best Western Hotel site. The federal agency has directed its border report to a statement on March 20, 2021 announcing its contract with Endeavors.
ICE officials said the number of detainees at the hotel was fluid, explaining it as a stage where migrant families were constantly coming and going.
Editor’s Note: The Best Western Hotel Group states that El Paso’s Endeavor ICE contract facility “is not operated as a Best Western branded hotel.” According to the company, it has nothing to do with this property.
The Border Report has also sent an email to Endeavours for comment and is waiting for a response.
Endeavors describes itself as a faith-based organization set up to improve the “quality of life of vulnerable people.”
