Albuquerque, New Mexico — Hockey is back in New Mexico. So are fans of the New Mexico Ice Wolves home opener.

Over 100 fans reunited and saw the Ice Wolves challenge Corpus Christi Ice Rays in their first home game of the season. I am very grateful to be back, especially after last season was affected by the pandemic.

“I know they were on a lot of roads last year, so I’m looking forward to seeing them here and playing,” says Erie Guzzo. “All the way last season,” says Tyler Branch.

For Phil Fox, head coach and general manager, his players are thrilled to see these fans return to the stands. “I feel good. The fans here love hockey, they love ice wolves. I’m happy to play in front of them.”

They were playing for their fans as much as Ice Wolves was playing for their fans. Mack Motzko died in a car accident this summer.

“It’s always hard to lose someone who is part of a family and who sees the people playing here as a family,” Fox said. When the players headed over the ice, they tapped his jersey to honor him.

“This season is definitely dedicated to the 17th Mac, so we look forward to him being on top of us and giving us the power we need,” says Fox.
