Editor Andrea Guyton was shopping at a grocery store on Saturday afternoon after seeing a 28-year-old robber.
“The tattoo he had, the fact that he was covered in soil, and the fact that he came out was so strange that I recognized him almost immediately,” Guyton said. “At first I was frozen.” Wait, is this a man? “And as he approached, I saw a tattoo. It was like “Oh, this is him!”
Guyton says they were both in the produce section of the store.
“We made eye contact for a while. He passed me, grabbed an apple, started eating it, and got out of the front door,” she said.
For the past two days, no one else seemed to be aware of the prominent 20-hour standoffs with police and the man who was at the center of the blockade of nearby businesses and schools.
There Guyton took action and warned the clerk.
“After he left, I was like,’You guys, it was him, this was a man.’ And the clerk didn’t know who he was, so he said,’Because this was a man. You don’t have to call the policeman, “she says.
Guyton says Savemart employees were shocked because they believed the store was safe. Police announced late Friday that Van was likely to have fled the area.
Minutes after Guyton met Van, he was arrested by police when he tried to flee to a nearby apartment complex.
Officers later said they reopened the shopping center on Friday afternoon, leaving behind hidden officers and troops nearby.
Who do you think is feeling the Savemart ceiling today? It may have withdrawn the visible SWAT operation, but left the undercover investigator intact. Our MAGEC detective and northeastern patrol police immediately arrested the suspect Pheng Vang when he began to run. pic.twitter.com/yodRDX4EBG

As for Gayton, she says it may take some time to recover from the encounter.
“It’s still a little shaken because it’s the closest to what we’ve been talking about,” she says.
