‘In turmoil’: Emergency meeting held to address the rising violence at Lawrence High School – Boston News, Weather, Sports – Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts 2021-10-18 22:13:20 –

Lawrence, Massachusetts. (WHDH)-Lawrence Mayor Kendris Basquez called an emergency meeting Monday night to address the heightened violence at Lawrence High School.

City council members and members of the school committee discussed with Cynthia Paris about the safety of the school and the future of state administration for Lawrence Public Schools. A commissioner from the Department of Primary and Secondary Education was invited to the meeting, but instead sent a representative.

Parents in attendance are allowed to express dissatisfaction in public, more than 20 brawls have occurred on campus in recent weeks, teachers and staff are injured, and some students are prosecuted. Many talked enthusiastically about their concerns because of the potential.

“Our high school is confused. It’s confusing,” said Devo Brown, whose nephew attends school there. “Now, the lid is blown out of the pot until the boiling point. These parents not only ask for an answer, they deserve it.”

One parent told 7NEWS that she hadn’t been to school for more than a week because her daughter was so scared.

At the meeting, many wanted to resign from Paris.

“I understand that many of these fights are happening, and they are just happening, but many fights have been discussed in advance and people are ignoring them,” said one parent. I did. “If you’re not ready to work, resign.”

The district has been operating under the state trustees for 10 years, and local authorities say they are dissatisfied with what they call the lack of progress that has been made since then.

Cynthia Paris has blamed recent violence for tight adjustments when returning to class a year after distance learning.

She brought more police to the campus and adjusted the student’s schedule to curb the fighting.

“One of the reasons we asked such a big question in the proposal submitted to Congress in May is the fundamentals related to mental health after the year the children were isolated and the mental health of the child. There was no face-to-face school for a year, all the rest, “Governor Charlie Baker said in response to the report.
