Srinagar, India (AP) —Two gunfights in India-controlled Kashmir killed seven suspected militants and injured four soldiers, officials said Friday.

According to police, militants hid in the mosque as government troops blocked the neighborhood of a town in southern Chopiyan. According to police, the shooter refused to surrender, causing a battle that ended on Friday.

Indian Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Emron Musabi said five militants were killed and three soldiers and army officers were injured.

As the fighting intensified, the residents of Chopiyan on both days marched near the site of the clash in solidarity with rebels, advocating the slogan for the end of Indian rule. Government forces fired shotgun pellets and tear gas at stone-throwing protesters.

There were no casualties reported.

Separately in southern Torral, Musabi said government troops killed two rebels in a short battle on Friday. He said the military had recovered seven rifles and two pistols.

The Himalayan region of Kashmir is divided into India and Pakistan, both claiming the entire territory. Many Muslim Kashmirs support the rebels’ goal of uniting the region under Pakistani control or as an independent state.

Pakistan has denied India’s accusations of sponsoring terrorism in Kashmir. Tens of thousands of civilians, rebels and government troops were killed in the conflict.
