Southern Colorado — Saturday concludes the second day of the two-day CHSAA Women’s Tennis Tournament across Centennial.
In the 4A category, the Cheyenne Mountain Women’s Tennis Team won the 2021 runner-up trophy. This is the 12th consecutive time Indians have been in the top two in state championship tournaments.
Indians participated in championship rounds competing in three different matches. Unfortunately, none of these games could claim victory, but there were enough points to finish in second place.
“I was surprised,” explained Cheyenne Mountain Headgirl tennis coach Dave Adams. “I didn’t expect it to end in a second, but in the first year eight girls joined Varsity in this group, so I’m pretty excited about this finish.”
Adams could hardly do Coach this season due to laryngeal cancer, Currently in remission.
The only individual winner from southern Colorado was Tessa Rothwell in Palmer Ridge. He defeated Niott’s Anna Sally with a second-place single.
It was the second state championship for Rothwell, who won the No. 3 singles in the second grade.
“My only goal was to express it. When I achieved it, I was just having a good time and having fun,” Rothwell said. “But I came here without any expectations.”
In 3A, Vanguard’s Jaden Fuqua (Sr.) fell to Dawson’s Alexis Gilio 6-3, 6-3 in the second single-state final.
