Taunton, Massachusetts (WHDH)-The Rehobos family shares anger after a Taunton police sergeant was charged with drunk driving in connection with a severe weekend accident and one of his loved ones was seriously injured and hospitalized. ..

Raynham’s Sean Smith, 49, was arrested on suspicion of a drunken driving accident and was taken on leave after seriously injuring a motorcyclist, officials said.

Smith was indicted in the Tonton District Court on Monday on charges including driving a car under the influence of alcohol, which caused serious injuries and negligent driving of the car. Smith has been a member of the Taunton Police Department since November 2000.

According to Walsh, a 52-year-old Rehobos man was seriously injured when a police officer reported a collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle at the intersection of Harvey Street and South Crane Avenue around 1:30 am on Sunday. I found it. A man later identified as George Haskel was taken to the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, and his sister Cheryl Sheppley said his injury was terrible.

“The entire left side of his body is broken,” Shepley said, adding that the eight fathers had already undergone two surgeries.

“A hospital nurse approached me and said he couldn’t understand how to say that his injury wasn’t life-threatening,” Haskel’s mother said. “When he is on a ventilator and almost all the bones in his body are broken.”

According to court documents, witnesses said he saw Smith turning and driving in the opposite lane before the collision, and police on the scene sniffed alcohol in his breath.

Haskel’s best friend Jeff Thorpe was riding his bike right in front of him when that happened.

“If I wasn’t there, and these other people weren’t there, this guy was going to take off and leave my friend in the gutter and die,” Thorpe said.

Shepley said he was furious at allegedly drunk police members.

“I support police, firefighters, and our army … someone with that ability can grab the steering wheel. [while drunk] It’s annoying, “Shepley said.

Smith was released on bail and ordered not to drink or drive until the case was resolved.

“I can get his salary and go home to his family, my buddy is now bust in the hospital and lay down almost dead,” Thorpe said. “That’s wrong.”

The investigation continues to be active with the support of state police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
