At Salinas Valley State Penitentiary, a Kings County inmate has been accused of murdering a fellow inmate and an investigation is underway.

Authorities say 30-year-old Angel Montez used a weapon to attack 59-year-old Peter Hernandez in a residential unit last Wednesday.

Before Hernandez was pronounced dead, officers rushed to stop the assault and staff provided life-saving measures.

Montez was already serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole in a prison in Soledad.

He’s there for a number of charges, including attempted murder of a government official with a firearm, resisting arrest, and carjacking.

The prison has not released details about the motive for last week’s attack or the weapons used.
