Boston (WHDH)-Furious commuters forced to deal with long delays all day as investigations underway after a Red Line train derailed by dozens of passengers at a Boston subway station on Tuesday morning. Caused a headache.
A spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the service was interrupted at around 9:45 am due to a slow derailment on the southbound railroad track at Broadway Station.
At the time of the incident, 47 people were on the train. No injuries have been reported.
MBTA personnel spent a day rebuilding a damaged train.
In the process of rerailing, the incident train rolled off the platform at Broadway station, a spokesman confirmed. The crew on the train was able to stop it, and again, no injuries were reported.
According to MBTA, the shuttle bus replaced the service between JFK / UMass and Park Street stations during the evening commute.
A photo shared by Elisabeth Boyce-Jacino showed serious damage to a railroad vehicle allegedly touching the edge of the platform.
“I felt like I had to suddenly stop at a red light in the car,” recalls Voice Jacino. “The momentum moves you forward, not as much as I fell out of my seat, but my backpack collapsed … it was a very unexpected stop.”
Boyce-Jacino added that he was able to see chunks of the platform knocked out by train.
“There was something like debris everywhere … I could see the lumps taken out by train. It was pretty nuts,” she explained.
A cell phone video shot at the scene showed some passengers climbing through a broken train window following a derailment.
The rider remained frustrated as the incident groaned the subway service for several hours.
“Their service is terrible,” said commuter Amy Wellman. “The escalator situation happened yesterday, which was tragic … now there is a train for the disabled.”
Commuters were told that a long delay was expected due to the dispatch of the shuttle bus.
Commuter Stephen Rockwood said the shuttle bus was full of passengers and was called “claustrophobia.”
“I’m vaccinated, but I just don’t want to be around so many people,” he said.
Braintree customers are encouraged to use the commuter train. CharlieCard can be used between South Station and Braintree Station.
The cause of the derailment is not immediately apparent, and nothing is said about when the service will return to normal.
