Washington (NEXSTAR) — The IRS will begin its tax filing season on February 12, delaying the start of the tax season by about two weeks, officials announced on Friday.

The tax season usually begins in late January, but has been delayed due to stimulus payments and changes in tax law.

Collected rebate credits are available to tax filers who have not received the full amount of the stimulus check.

Richard E. Neil, chairman of the Methods and Means Committee, issued a statement on Friday, disappointed with the delay, but said he was aware that the IRS was facing unique challenges this year.

“It’s encouraging that the IRS expects taxpayers who submit electronically at the beginning of the season and claim refundable tax credits to get a refund by the first week of March,” Neil said. Stated. “Taxpayers are advised to complete their tax returns and submit them electronically as soon as possible.”

The IRS also announced that the IRS Free File program is now available if taxpayers want to start working before the date of February 14th.

The tax filing deadline for 2020 is April 15.
