The attack took place a week after a bombing claimed by a local Islamic State affiliate killed 46 people at a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan, with IS (both Taliban and Western enemies) gaining a foothold in Afghanistan. It raised concerns that it was expanding.

The Friday attack was the most deadly to attack Afghanistan since the dramatic departure of the United States, which allowed the Taliban to take control of Afghanistan’s capital. It was also the first major attack by a group in the southern part of the country.

IS frequently attacks its bases in the east, but recently there are signs of expansion in attacks in the north and Kabul. The attack casts doubt on the Taliban’s ability to counter the growing threat of IS.
