Pittsburgh (KDKA) – When a car crashed into a building on Saturday morning, 10 employees and 5 donors were inside the Biomat USA Plasma Center on Western Avenue, with an unknown number of people outside.
Lucky witnesses who didn’t hit the car say they saw the car soar from the West End Bridge, causing an accident.
“I just panic,” said Shane McDavid. “I didn’t know if there was a flame.”
McDavid was inside a Manchester building on Saturday morning.
“The whole building started rumbling,” he recalled. “The first thing I thought about was an earthquake. I really didn’t know what was going on.”
McDavid remembered turning his head and what he saw through the shower of debris.
“I noticed that the car was 10 feet to the right in the building,” he said.
As the dust settled down, so did his reality.
“There was a girl sitting at the end of the car,” he said. “While she was sitting there, a car crashed from her back.”
The next thing he knew was that employees were rushing out, as smoke was pouring through a crevice hole caused by a red Hyundai Santa Fe that hit the building.
It’s also where Jason Betts saw it happen.
“It sounded like a train wreck,” he said. “That’s how noisy it was. They had to go 100 mph to get through the wall. It went all the way to the back of the building.”
Witnesses said the car was running very fast before the wreck and had little understanding of what kind of car it was.
The entire front surface has peeled off and is badly burnt, so it cannot be recognized.
