The Golden Gate Bridge is a good example of a great bridge name, credits are given to John C. Freemont, who named the strait the Golden Gate, not to the person who came up with the name of the bridge. So it was really easy to name the bridge.
There are several other great bridge names. Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy. Pont du Gard in France; Fengyu Bridge in China. Hell Gate in New York City.
Sometimes you don’t have to get fancy. There is no problem with the names of London Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge.
Since the idea of replacing the Gerald Desmond Bridge in Long Beach, the city and harbor have been worried about what they call the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement, and have been informally called either during its construction and even after its opening. The new Gerald Desmond Bridge or where to go.
Finally, the general public has the opportunity to vote for the official name of the new bridge.
Catch: There are only three options. Two of them are virtually the same, one is a little above and neither is spectacular.
It’s easy to complain about your choices. That’s why I’m doing it, rather than coming up with a better name. I asked readers for suggestions last year, and quite as expected, the most popular name was Bridgey McBridgeface.
I liked the Bridge of Lights and the Angels Gate Bridge, but no one heard the story of a simple country columnist.
In a newsletter sent by California State Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell on Friday, he announced that he plans to introduce a law on the permanent name of the bridge based on feedback from the community.
For your consideration:
- International gateway bridge
- Long Beach International Gateway Bridge — A more localized spin of Option 1.
- Long Beach Pacific Crossing Bridge — It would be great if the bridge spans the world’s largest ocean, rather than jumping over the harbor waterways.

According to O’Donnell, the feedback from the “community” that gave us these choices comes from a dozen people selected by O’Donnell, State Senator Lena Gonzalez, and Mayor of Long Beach Robert Garcia. There has never been a good one from a committee other than an elephant.
After the name is chosen, it goes to the state legislature, and O’Donnell says he is confident that the name will pass before the end of the legislative year in early September.
The “community” was moving away from naming the bridge after someone like General Robert E. Lee of the Confederates. This will inevitably lead to a name change in the next few years.
“I felt that we should focus on the physical symbolism of the structure,” O’Donnell said.
In fact, there are some bits of new bridges named after people. The unfinished bike lane is named after Mark Bixby, a late supporter of cycling, and O’Donnell is the observatory outside the path at the top of the bridge, which is the origin of the old bridge’s name. It is said to be named after Gerald Desmond.
