‘It’s not a handout, it’s a hand up.’ Detroit to explore reparations for African American residents – Kansas City, Missouri

Detroit — A group of Detroit-elected officials wants the city to investigate the possibility of providing compensation to black residents to compensate for past discriminatory practices.

Push is in its infancy, but the people behind it say it’s been late for a long time, and it starts with admitting damage.

“If you have problems with compensation, have a conversation,” said lawyer Todd Perkins. “Let me find out what your problem is. When we leave the conversation, we guarantee that you will have different ideas about compensation.”

Perkins has joined a black executive in the Democratic Party of Michigan seeking compensation for black Detroit. By definition, compensation is the treatment of injustice by paying money or by helping those who have been treated in some way.

“I know one thing, it’s a hand-delivery, not a handout,” said Protem Mary Shefield, president of the Detroit City Council. “That’s what Black Detroit owes. I think we’re going to start research and research — what are the other cities doing? What’s best suited for Detroit? But that’s Detroit’s economic upward liquidity, generational wealth, home ownership, and what we’ve historically been left behind. “

Shefield has issued a reparation resolution that she says has admitted that African Americans have been systematically suppressed and harmed by slavery, racism, police, imprisonment, and voter oppression.

“There are many needs, many problems,” she said. “There were so many discriminatory policies that left behind so many Detroits related to creating generational wealth for the family, so we want to explore, study, and study compensation issues. “

Compensation does not necessarily come in the form of monthly payments to qualified Black Detroit. But Mr Perkins said the money could come from the detroit marijuana tax.

“For one, they’re new money. I know a lot of African Americans in jail for their involvement in marijuana. It’s a legitimate activity today,” Perkins said.

March, suburbs of Chicago Evanston It has become the first city in the country to create a compensation program for black residents in the form of $ 25,000 home renovation credits for those who suffer from discriminatory housing policies.

Todd Perkins presented the city with about 4,000 signatures to get ballot suggestions. This will change the charter and allow the group’s Detroit to decide on the allocation of funds.

“If this is democracy, allow democracy to happen and let people at least talk about how they spend their money,” he said.

On Friday, the people behind this promotion of compensation in Detroit will hold a press conference to begin engaging the community for their views.
