Jaguar Land Rover said Tuesday that it is working on a prototype of a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle and that testing of the concept is expected to begin later this year.
This vehicle is based on a new version of the company’s Land Rover Defender and is part of JLR’s extensive endeavor to reach its zero tailpipe emissions target by 2036. Vehicle testing focuses on areas such as fuel consumption and off. -Road function.
In the announcement, it is owned by the company — Tata Motors — Fuel cell electric vehicles are described as “a complement to battery-powered electric vehicles and the road to zero vehicle emissions.”
“Hydrogen-powered FCEVs provide high energy density and rapid refueling, minimizing range loss at low temperatures. This technology allows larger, longer range vehicles, or hotter temperatures. Or it’s ideal for vehicles that operate in cold environments, “the company added.
Vehicles used by people appear to change as governments seek to reduce emissions and improve urban air quality.
For example, the UK plans to stop selling new diesel and gasoline vehicles from 2030. Starting in 2035, tailpipe emissions for all new cars and vans should be zero.
Companies such as JLR are slowly but surely trying to adapt to this new reality. Earlier this year, the company announced that the Jaguar brand would be all-electric from 2025. The Land Rover segment also announced that it will roll out six “pure electric variants” over the next five years.
“Role to play” of hydrogen
Described by the International Energy Agency as a “multipurpose energy carrier,” hydrogen has a variety of uses and can be deployed in fields such as industry and transportation.
Examples of use in the transportation sector include hydrogen buses in cities such as London and Aberdeen. Meanwhile, hydrogen fuel cell airplanes have also been flying in recent years.
After announcing plans to build an ocean-going ferry powered by hydrogen fuel cells last week A commercial contract was awarded for the development of the concept design.
“Hydrogen has a role to play in the transportation industry as a whole and alongside battery-powered electric vehicles in the future powertrain mix,” Ralph Clog, head of hydrogen and fuel cells at Jaguar Land Rover, said in a statement. I know that. “
Clague added that it offers “another zero-tail pipe discharge solution for specific features and requirements” in JLR’s vehicle lineup.
Jaguar Land Rover is not the only car company considering hydrogen vehicles. For other manufacturers that have entered the hydrogen fuel cell market, Toyota And Honda, Riversimple is also working on hydrogen vehicles.
