James Franco’s Castro casting defended by producers after Leguizamo Bash

James Franco was cast as Fidel CastroSomething John Leguizamo It’s outrageous to say…but the film’s producers fight back, albeit with a slightly confusing explanation.

News broke this week that JF will play the late Cuban dictator who rose to power in the 1950s and pioneered communism. It sounds like James is trying to play a somewhat younger Castro…and of course there are some double takes.

Leguizamo, perhaps one of the most vocal critics, wrote:

He added, “Plus, it’s a very difficult story to tell without exaggerating. This would be wrong! I don’t have a problem with Franco, but he’s not Latino!”

So John’s frustration seems to lie in the fact that dramatized films about Castro can’t help but humanize him, which, given the FC’s notoriously tough regime, is wrong. He thinks. So, according to JL, casting is already off to a bad start.

Well, he’s clearly wrong about this…so the movie’s producer says, John Martinez O’Phelanwho says THR John is missing the big picture. But frankly, what that larger point is isn’t very clear from the JMOF description.

He said, “Man like John Leguizamo has historically been revered by Hispanics since the ’90s as one of the earliest Latino actors in America. .”

O’Phelan continues…”The reality of the ignorant part falls within his statements suggesting his personal views on being ‘Latino’ because the landmass This is because a person’s pedigree and genetics are not determined by his or her sphere of life.”

He went on to say that John’s words are “a big topic because they represent the same turmoil and identity crisis in Hollywood now within the Hispanic community of America, which we insist we should only identify with as Latin.” spread by actors who are supposed to represent us, instead causing division among their own people.” Hmm, what? ? ?

Yeah, it’s a one word salad in response – but from what we can gather…he doesn’t have a problem with James being white.Maybe because Castro had Spanish roots.Latin It opens a can of worms as to whether Americans are racially considered white…and yes, technically it is possible.

And for those who are offended by the inauthentic casting here, that argument is somewhat muted now that Ana de Armas has been cast as another iconic historical figure, Marilyn Monroe. Deflated, but on the American side, ADA still maintains traces of its Spanish accent in its performances.
