King Charles III formally proclaims Britain’s new monarch in a centuries-old accession council ceremony

Charles IIIAbout 700 members of the current Membership Council, the oldest functioning part of the British government, are based in St James of London, the official residence of the British kings and queens for centuries. It was convened on Saturday at the palace.

For the first time in the long history of the Accession Council, a two-part ceremony will be televised on Saturday. You can watch the live transcript on CBS News in the player above.

The Council is composed of a select group of senior politicians, including the Privy Councilor, the new Prime Minister Liz Truss, an Anglican religious leader, the Lord Mayor of London and a bevy of other top civil servants from across British society, 14 Any other “realm” or state in which the monarch serves as the official head of state.

Charles III, who became king shortly after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday after a record 70-year reign, has officially acknowledged the passing of one monarch and is set to announce a new monarch. It was the role of the council to proclaim the monarch. One represents the UK government. This is part of the UK constitutional process.

About 200 of the current privy councilors attended the proceedings in London on Saturday, including many former prime ministers and other senior politicians.of Privy Council Dating back nearly 1,000 years, it is the oldest functioning part of the British government.

During the first part of the ceremony, the Chairman of the Council, British MP Penny Mordaunt, announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II, followed by the Council Secretary, Richard Tilbrook, reading the Declaration of Accession.

The declaration was then signed by the members of the council.

In the second part of the Council, King Charles attended the meeting of St. James. The privy councilor saw the new monarch read a proclamation on his mother’s death and pledged to serve the Church of Scotland. He is also the official leader of the Church of Scotland.

The King then signed the two proclamations first, followed by his son and heir, the Prince of Wales, and other witnesses.

Following the accession council proceedings, from the proclamation gallery on the balcony of St James’s Palace, the Garter King of Arms read out King Charles’ proclamation as monarch.

Trumpets sounded as the Garter King of Arms prepared to read the proclamation. Then another trumpet salute followed the cry of “God save the king”. by those gathered in the courtyard below the Declaration Gallery. The assembled crowd sang the British national anthem, with new and revised lyrics for “God save the king.”

The proclamation was followed by a gun salute, which was then repeated elsewhere in London and later in the capital of Britain’s other home country in Edinburgh, Scotland. Belfast in Northern Ireland and Cardiff in Wales.

The remainder of King Charles’ third day in office includes a series of formal meetings called ‘audiences’ to which Buckingham Palace refers. Archbishop of Canterbury, Prime Minister, other ministers and leaders of the British opposition.
