Jeffco school board candidates look beyond COVID-19 – Denver, Colorado

Despite protests and voice backlash at the school board meeting, Jeffco’s board candidates say they are focusing on what happens after the COVID pandemic, not the current COVID-related issues.

Instead, candidates focus on improving academic performance, improving mental health support, and hiring and retaining quality teachers. However, some candidates believe that removing the obligation to mask is part of improving the mental health of students.

Seven candidates are running for three recruitment positions on the five-seater Jeffco Board of Education. The district is the second largest in Colorado and has about 80,000 students.

Elections can change the direction of the district. The majority of current boards include members who support and approve teachers’ unions. If district and union critics win two of the three vacant seats, they will be the majority.
